SMSTS is a qualification introduced in 2002 by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of the UK government’s policy to increase health and safety awareness on construction sites. This course is very focused on law, regulatory requirements and what specific good practice looks like as underpinned by the law. The course is designed for both inexperienced and experienced managers in the construction industry who are responsible for managing a construction workforce. This qualification aids candidates to prove their health and safety knowledge, skills and experience which can lead to a more successful career within the workplace.
The aim of the SMSTS is to increase candidates knowledge and awareness of:
Duration
5 days (5 consecutive days or one weekday releases over 5 weeks)
The course is classroom-based and made up of a combination of case studies, group and individual exercises, presentations and a final examination. Certification is issued by the CITB – Construction Industry Training Board (Site Safety Plus)

Candidates are required to attend all 5 days of the training to be awarded the qualification. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates receive certification under the accreditation of CITB which lasts for 5 years. Managers are required to attend a 2-day SMSTS refresher prior to the expiry of their 5-year certification. This enables candidates to increase their knowledge and development to be able to put in to practice the latest legal developments, codes of practice and other construction industry issues.
